ChatGPT just hired an intern that never logs off.
At DevDay on Sept 29, OpenAI unveiled Dots: always-on AI agents with their own computer that keep grinding after you close the tab. Plus a cheaper brain called GPT-6.1 Sol.
The TL;DR
- Dots are ChatGPT agents that work 24/7, with their own computer and browser, and plug into 4,000+ apps.
- They come with ChatGPT Pro, OpenAI's premium plan. Free and Plus users don't get them yet.
- GPT-6.1 Sol gets close to OpenAI's top model for about a fifth of the price.
Remember when chatbots just… chatted? Cute. OpenAI's DevDay on Sept 29 made it official: the new main character is the agent. It's called a Dot, and it's basically an intern who never sleeps, never takes PTO and never replies "per my last email."
Each Dot gets its own computer and browser, learns from your feedback and keeps working after you close the tab. Connect it to any of 4,000+ apps and it chips away at the boring stuff in the background while you go live your life. Under the hood it runs on GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's most powerful model.
The catch: Dots are included with ChatGPT Pro, the premium tier, and DevDay also brought a brand-new $500-a-month plan. Free and Plus users are watching from the cheap seats for now. OpenAI also showed ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace of interactive "pages" with charts, checklists and dashboards.
Builders got a treat too: GPT-6.1 Sol, which gets close to Astra on coding and pro work at one-fifth of the price. Cheaper brains for developers usually mean smarter apps for everyone a few months later.
Why you should care
AI is shifting from something you talk to into something that does stuff for you. If you're on the free plan nothing changes today, but this is where every app is heading. Rule of thumb: never hand an agent more logins or card details than the job needs.
