Apple wants a clearer yes before AI gets your whole Mac.
Apple announced plans on October 2 to strengthen consent around macOS Full Disk Access, warning that increasingly autonomous AI agents make this powerful permission riskier. The announcement does not give a rollout date.
The TL;DR
- Full Disk Access can expose files, email, messages and browsing history.
- Apple plans additional controls requiring a very explicit decision from users.
- Apple has not announced when the new controls will arrive.
That little permissions screen is carrying a lot of responsibility. Apple says Full Disk Access lets apps sidestep many of the Mac's usual privacy controls, originally to make backups work properly. It warns that some developers are using that access without users fully understanding what they are handing over.
The exposure can reach beyond your own secrets. Apple specifically flags communication apps, where access can also affect the privacy of people you talk to. Imagine inviting a helper to organise your desk and discovering the invitation also covers everyone else's letters sitting in the drawer.
Apple says future controls will require a very explicit user action before granting this access. TechCrunch's corrected report clarifies that the change concerns informed consent rather than a new permission limit. Apple has not detailed the new interface or a release timetable in its announcement.
Our take: a useful permission screen should answer three ordinary questions. What can this app reach? Why does this task need that access? How do I take it back? We would like the new controls to make those answers obvious before anyone clicks through. No law degree, no detective work, no tiny-print side quest.
Why you should care
Treat broad access as a meaningful decision when choosing an AI helper. Our practical rule: if you cannot explain why an app needs permission to read so much, pause before granting it. A promising demo can wait while you understand the invitation you are sending.
